Washington's Food Fight: The Debate Over GMO Labels
Wataru Kaizuka
“Huh? What’s GMO? Does it have something to
do with food and our health?” Most people would probably say so. Of course,
food labeling takes a big part in our life. It tells us what the product is
made of, and even where the original ingredients were made. Knowing these
information gives us relief, and we can distinguish whether the product really
fits our body. It is convincing that food labeling is required by law.
But now, the question is,
“Should GM(Genetically Modified) food be
labeled, too?”
When people spend their lives, the custom
of eating healthy food and taking the right nutrition is essential. GM foods
are existence that has high percentage of causing harm to human bodies. It may
be difficult for people who don’t know about the situation, because you can’t
tell if it’s a GM food or a normal food just by looking. But what if, in a rare
possibility, a person took a GM food without understanding anything? He or she
might become sick, or may even cause death. It is no use if life is taken away.
In order for people to spend a healthy life, GM foods should be labeled as soon
as possible.

I'm glad to see that you've become interested in the GMO labeling debate and you watched this serious YouTube video about it. Unfortunately, the ballot initiative in Washington State for mandatory labeling of GMO ingredients was defeated. The vote was fairly close 54.8% to 45.2%. If it had passed, Washington would have been the only state in the US to require manufacturers to label ingredients as GMO. A similar ballot initiative failed in California by a smaller margin a few years ago. I voted for it, as a California voter.
返信削除Not surprisingly, the largest donors to the campaign to defeat the initiative were companies that produce GMO products or the pesticides and herbicides that work along side them: Monsanto, DuPont Pioneer, Dow AgroSciences and Bayer CropScience.
As far as I know, GMO products have not caused death or serious ailments in people at a mass level, but, the fact that they have only been used for a short time in human history, means that we really have no idea of the long-term consequences, so, I agree with you that we should be cautious and avoid them whenever we can. I try to buy organic food for that reason. Organic food is, by definition, not GMO.
When I read labels in Japan I notice that food companies are proud to put "not from a GMO source" next to the name of the ingredient, but I've never seen a product that labeled ingredients as being GMO, which seems suspicious. To be on the safe side, it's best to eat organic food.
Cheers,
Joseph D
I also think labeling GM foods are a very serious problem. People should know what they eat and I think it labeling it is a must
